Updates on progress and timescales
Preparatory works for Yorkshire GREEN have progressed well since they began in autumn 2024 and we would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation while we have been undertaking these works.
For the first few months of 2025, we have continued our preparatory works which has included:
finishing our bellmouths and access tracks
installing pylon foundations
clearing vegetation to improve sight lines for vehicles
widening a section of Overton Road to enable access for large vehicles
completing the Overton Substation and Monk Fryston Substation compounds.
Our teams are now commencing main construction activities in key areas across the route. This summer we will also receive deliveries of Super Grid Transformers (SGTS) to our substation sites, including Overton. SGTs are huge electrical devices used in substations to convert electricity into a higher or lower voltage. We will be sharing more information about the SGT deliveries in the coming months.
As shared before, Yorkshire GREEN is expected to be operational in 2027 and final works and reinstatement are to be complete by the end of 2028.
Corban Lane
National Grid takes the safety of our communities very seriously and we understand from our own assessments that there is some damage to the highway on Corban Lane. Our findings show that this damage is located near to East Lane and is unlikely to have been caused by vehicles servicing Yorkshire GREEN as we are not permitted to use this route to access our site as per the requirements set out in the approved Development Consent Order (DCO) for the project.
The local highways authority would therefore be best placed to address any concerns relating to the condition of the road in this area. Across the route, where we recognise that our works have contributed to the deterioration of road surfaces, we have worked with the local authority to arrange repairs where appropriate.
We will continue to monitor the condition of the highway near to our sites, and where appropriate will liaise with the local authority to discuss remedial works required.
Visuals of the substation and pylons
We understand that members of the local community are interested about what the new Overton Substation and pylons will look like once constructed. Unfortunately, we are unable to supply additional visualisations other than those that were produced as part of our DCO consultation.
Following our attendance at a previous parish council meeting last year, we shared information relating to the substation and associated infrastructure, including some visualisation images and landscaping that will be in place. Please find these reattached or ease.
Proposed connections to Overton Substation
We are aware that there are other energy infrastructure projects in the area, including the proposed battery energy storage system (BESS), and associated connection requests from other projects. National Grid do not control or predict, approve or reject which organisations will make requests to connect and we are bound by our licences to process requests and connect projects on a ‘first come first served’ basis once they are approved.
It is the Local Planning Authority that decides whether a project receives planning permission to proceed and not National Grid.
